Overview

Eric Whaley was a temporary lieutenant at Firehouse 51 who filled in for Kelly Severide while Severide recovered from neck surgery. Eric is also the brother of Renée Whaley, Severide’s former fiancée.  

His arrival immediately created tension inside the house because he blamed Severide for what happened to Renée after their broken engagement.

Personality

Eric was serious, protective, and fiercely loyal to his family. He often came across as confrontational, especially toward Severide, but his anger came from concern for his sister’s emotional collapse after the wedding was called off.

Despite the conflict, Eric showed compassion and maturity once he learned the full truth about Renée’s actions and the pain both she and Kelly experienced.

Storyline

After Severide stepped away for medical treatment, Eric temporarily joined Squad 3 at Firehouse 51. During his time there, he confronted Severide over abandoning Renée before their wedding. Eric revealed that Renée spiraled into alcoholism afterward and suffered a devastating car accident that left her in a coma.  

Leslie Shay later explained that Renée had cheated on Kelly before the wedding, something Kelly kept secret to protect her family while she recovered. Eric eventually softened toward Severide after realizing the situation was more complicated than he believed.  

Eric later helped reconnect Kelly and Renée by giving Kelly her contact information.
